With Around Kids, here we are in Switzerland for a chat with the Swiss journalist Claudia Jucker, mother of Mina and Ida
The Swiss journalist and founder of the Hoi Berlin Blog, Claudia Jucker tells us how her life has changed with the arrival of her two girls. After spending four years in Berlin, she recently decided to return to Zurich where she lives with her husband and the two daughters Mina and Ida
Did Mina and Ida 's arrival change your habits, your style?
Kind of. But I must admit that in the first place my focus switched from myself to the kids. So I had much more fun finding clothes and stuff for them and I realized that I really liked playing with the styles for my girls. Lucky me they are both very open minded and do not insist on wearing Frozen motifs or girls classics. I prefer brands which are not ready-made and it’s a sport for me to discover new trends and explore the growing market. Over the years I developed an affinity for brands which are far from mainstream.

How do you shop for them and yourself?
Before the pandemic we used to travel a lot and we took the opportunity to shop local brands and styles wherever we were. And we do love 2nd hand and flea markets. But we also support swiss brands like Tiger Swiss, namuk, eli-ju, Poplin Project, Mimi & Bart or YIV. I’m subscribed to many newsletters and therefore I often shop online for bargains in sales. Especially when it comes to brands like Stella McCartney, Mini Rodini, Tiny Cottons, Fresh Dinosaurs, Patagonia, North Face or Burton. My oldest daughter Mina is very lucky to get clothes from a very close friend of mine who has an excellent taste in fashion. And in the not too distant future she will probably wear my shoes and stuff too.
What does your home look like? They’re bedrooms?
It’s a mix of customized Ikea furniture and Vintage finds. We decided to let them have a space where they can do and play without paying attention to expensive furniture and we didn’t want to spend a fortune on fancy kids interior. They should feel free to be creative and comfortable. I’m only strict when it comes to books and tidying up their rooms. As for me books are one of the most valuable things in a kids room, I taught them how to treat them gently. And I still read stories before bedtime.
How are you organized for going out?
Oh, I’m not going out as often as I used to. But I do have some (old) classics in my wardrobe. I connect them to the places I bought them. I mostly wear sneakers and jazzy colors. And I prefer oversize cuts. It’s a mix of Monki, Acne, Other Stories, COS, Twothirds or Obey. Over the years, my outdoor wardrobe nearly topped my everyday life clothes. Therefore I have many backpacks and only four handbags. I spend more money on traveling, magazines and books. But when it comes to a fancy invitation I refer to my favorite jumpsuit. It’s always a good choice.
